Fellowship Project

Jasmine is crafting a theory (or set of theories) of rural algorithmic development and impact, focusing first on the rural southeastern U.S., followed by Appalachia, the midwest, southwest/central, and then other regions. Jasmine will explore existing policies and develop frameworks for rural AI policy that promote equity, mitigate bias, and explore the perspectives of those impacted by AI in rural contexts. She is conducting research to compare the perspectives of individuals and policymakers on the influence of AI and other algorithmic tools.

This work focuses on the implications for marginalized and vulnerable communities including, but not limited to, Black, Indigenous, migrant, immigrant, farming, and low-income individuals. Jasmine’s work will inform policy framework(s) related to AI, data governance, and privacy from a rural perspective, as well as increase awareness on the implications of AI in the rural context.
