Overview

Rapid advancements in large language models (LLMs) and their widespread accessibility have created excitement and concern within the scientific community. This article discusses the concerns of four experts in the field of artificial intelligence ethics and policy and highlights the potential risks associated with LLMs along with the need for responsible usage and careful consideration.

Since their emergence in 2018, LLMs have undergone significant developments, with newer models boasting over 100 trillion parameters with the ability to process text and images. 2022 saw an increase in discussions surrounding the use and potential misuse of LLMs in scientific research gained momentum with importance of maintaining good scientific practices and preserving trust in science."
