The Trustable Technology Mark is a ThingsCon initiative developed with support from Mozilla Foundation through a Mozilla Fellowship for project lead and ThingsCon co-founder Peter Bihr. ThingsCon is a global initiative to explore and promote the development of fair, responsible, and human-centric technologies for IoT and beyond.

Consumer IoT consists mostly of black boxes: Users have no way of knowing which connected device deserves their trust. As we increasingly invite more and more connected products into our lives, we need to know that they work for us and don't spy on us. A trustworthy Internet of Things is a core aspect of internet health.

The Trustable Technology Mark initiative aims to give consumers and manufacturers alike better tools to establish trust around connected devices. The Trustable Technology Mark evaluates 5 dimensions that are essential to establish the trustworthiness of a connected device:

Privacy & Data Practices
Is it designed using state of the art data practices, and respectful of user rights?

Transparency
Is it made clear to users what the device does and how data might be used?

Security
Is it made clear to users what the device does and how data might be used?

Stability
How robust is the device and how long of a life cycle can a consumer reasonably expect?

Openness
How open are both the device and the manufacturer's processes? Is open data used or generated?
