Founded in 2015, Muzz is made for Muslims looking for love. The app promises singles something powerful -- a chance to say goodbye to their pushy aunties (just when it comes to matchmaking, we assume). Users can get started for free -- which involves creating a profile, browsing other people's profiles, matching, and chatting. The app has some pretty unique features. Some cater specifically to the Muslim community, like the chance to add a chaperone to your in-app chats. There's also Dad Verification -- which lets potential partners dial up your dad for a video chat right from the app. Other things Muzz does a little differently? Users can add merit badges to your profile based on their experience with you, like "polite" or "recommended". You can also browse anonymously, using a nickname and blurred photos to shield your identity until you're ready. So, how is Muzz at privacy? Well, not too bad. Unfortunately, we couldn't confirm if they meet our Minimum Security Standards though.
Que pourrait-il se passer en cas de problème ?
Agh, Muzz is so close to being OK at privacy! And if that sounds like we're grasping at straws to find the positive, it's because we are. While Muzz's privacy policy seems to be OK, we can't confirm whether the app meets our Minimum Security Standards, which is not OK. It's not clear whether Muzz uses encryption and that's a problem because it means your personal data could be vulnerable to a leak or hack. Heck, Muzz's own privacy policy says "we do not promise, and you should not expect, that your personal information, chats, or other communications will always remain secure." It's good to keep that in mind, especially since Muzz can collect a lot of personal information about you.
Muzz can collect the contact information you give when signing up, as well as anything you put in your profile, like your ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, photos, videos, and more. Other personal information can be collected by the app automatically, like your IP address and geolocation.
Our little silver lining is that Muzz doesn't sell your personal data or share it for advertising. Cool! And they do give all users the right to have their personal data deleted. Also good! Sidenote about this though, it could take up to three years for your "personally identifiable information" to be deleted automatically by Muzz. There might be a faster way to do this, since the Help & Support section links to a page called "How do I Delete my Muzz Account?", but unfortunately that link is broken. Another OK thing about Muzz is that they haven't suffered a data breach or hack in the last three years, that we know of. That's all just the bare minimum, but worth mentioning since so many dating apps fall below this bar. But! We're not here to give "not the worst" awards, so we'll get back to a couple little worries we have left.
The privacy policy says that Muzz can share your information with "other Muzz group companies". That's sounds pretty standard though we couldn't find much information about those other companies -- if there are any. And you should know that if you sign in using Facebook, you could be giving permission for Muzz to access all kinds of information, like "your email address, interests, likes, gender, birthday, education history, relationship interests, current city, photos, personal description, friend list, and information about and photos of your Facebook friends who might be common Facebook friends with other Muzz users." Facebook might be able to collect some information from Muzz too, which is why we don't recommend connecting your social media accounts to your dating apps.
So what could go wrong with Muzz? Well since we're not sure if your profile data is encrypted, and since that could include your dad's phone number, we're worried some grifter could hack your account and dial up your dad! Nobody wants their pop's precious time to be wasted on prank calls.
Conseils pour vous protéger
- Follow Muzz's Safety Guidelines.
- Visit the app's privacy preferences at the app and opt out from personalized advertsing as well as all non-essential data collection.
- Request your data be deleted once you stop using the app. Simply deleting an app from your device usually does not erase your personal data nor does close your account.
- Do not give consent to constant geolocation tracking by the app. Better provide geolocation 'only when using the app'.
- Do not share sensitive data through the app.
- Do not give access to your photos and video or camera.
- Do not log in using third-party accounts.
- Do not connect to any third party via the app, or at least make sure that a third party employs decent privacy practices.
- Do not give consent for sharing of personal data for marketing and advertisement.
- Chose a strong password! You may use a password control tool like 1Password, KeePass etc.
- Do not use social media plug-ins.
- Use your device privacy controls to limit access to your personal information via app (do not give access to your camera, microphone, images, location unless neccessary).
- Keep your app regularly updated.
- Limit ad tracking via your device (eg on iPhone go to Privacy -> Advertising -> Limit ad tracking) and biggest ad networks (for Google, go to Google account and turn off ad personalization).
- When starting a sign-up, do not agree to tracking of your data if possible.
