Stressed about the little ones in your life getting too much screen time? The Yoto Player was designed for you. It’s a connected toy for parents who are tired of connected toys. With no cameras, microphones, or ads, this fun little speaker gives kids access to the whole wide web of audio without all the swiping, algorithmic spiraling, and spying that can happen if they borrow your tablet instead. Through the app, parents can control what makes it onto its playlist. With paper cards, kids can play their favorite songs and stories on their own. Over and over. And over.
¿Qué podría pasar si algo falla?
The Yoto Player is a bit more basic than your average connected toy. And that helps keep its privacy policy pretty simple too. It also helps that it's written in simple and clear language. It’s like they want you to understand it! Kudos, Yoto.
When you’re using the Yoto Player, the company can collect some pretty standard usage data from the device, like how you use the player and information about your wifi network. If you choose to use Yoto with the app -- which you probably will because that’s where you can create playlists and record your very own rendition of Baby Shark -- Yoto can collect a bit more data. They’ll store your recordings and playlists on their server. It says in their privacy policy though that they “cannot access or listen to the playlists.” That’s a comfort in case the songs you sing for your kids aren’t ready for primetime -- yet.
If you let your little one get in on the self-recording action, just know that you are technically consenting to sharing that information with Yoto, according to their Audio Recording Notice. If you decide to, Yoto gives simple instructions on how to delete those recordings and playlists too. They won’t be shared with any third parties, but just for safety’s sake maybe don’t name them after your credit card number or deepest-darkest-secrets.
We do have a grumble about Yoto -- we couldn't determine if they meet our Minimum Security Standards because we couldn’t find information about how they manage security vulnerabilities. All devices that connect to the internet should have a way of reporting bugs and issues. For a company that can collect and store recordings of your kids, we would love to be absolutely sure the company takes all possible measures to protect those recordings. As Yoto's own privacy policy says, "Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Although we do our best to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information transmitted to our website or App. Any transmission of personal information is at your own risk. Yoto is not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the website or App." This is a good reminder that the worst thing that could go wrong -- those cute recordings of your kid singing a song about much you hate your job -- could leak out into the world. You -- and your boss -- don't want that.
Consejos para protegerte
- Delete the lists & recordings from the app at times.
- Parents, keep a sharp eye on parent controls and permissions.
- Chose a strong password! You may use a password control tool like 1Password, KeePass etc
- Use your device privacy controls to limit access to your personal information via app (do not give access to your camera, microphone, images, location unless neccessary)
- Keep your app regularly updated
- Limit ad tracking via your device (eg on iPhone go to Privacy -> Advertising -> Limit ad tracking) and biggest ad networks (for Google, go to Google account and turn off ad personalization)
- Request your data be deleted once you stop using the app. Simply deleting an app from your device usually does not erase your personal data.
- When starting a sign-up, do not agree to tracking of your data if possible.
