Zoosk was founded in 2007 by two men with computer science backgrounds. The app says its behavioral matchmaking technology can help you find your perfect match. As of 2019, Zoosk belongs to the Spark Networks dating company. So just like its sister apps Elite Singles and JDate, it's free to join but users have to pay for a subscription to send messages. With Zoosk, there are lots of ways to connect with fellow "Zooskers". You can browse singles one-at-a-time with carousel mode, use the search function, or try out the SmartPick feature which uses a matching algorithm to make recommendations. Zoosk's FAQ says you can improve your picks by being more active on the app and answering a four-question SmartPick survey, which includes whether you want to limit your matches by ethnicity or religion. Zoosk claims to have as many users as the population of Canada. That's 40 million singles!

Co się może stać, jeśli coś pójdzie nie tak?

To all the Zooskers out there, we regret to inform you that a *Privacy Not Included warning comes with this app. Just like Jdate, ChristianMingle, and Elite Singles which are owned by the same parent company, the app's personal-data-sharing, questionable security, and the fact that they don't guarantee all users the right to delete their data has earned it a thumbs-down from us.

For starters, Zoosk sure can collect a lot of personal information about its users. There's contact information, like your name, email, address, and phone number. Then there's -- excuse me? -- your "sexual preferences and experiences". It's not unheard of for sex-related data to make its way into privacy policies but "experiences"? That is a new one for us. There's also your ethnicity, religion, political views, "physical characteristics," photographs, videos, biometric information, and more. Basically, all of the information you give about yourself while you're on the app can be collected by Zoosk, including whatever you add to your profile or send in messages. And when Zoosk collects your photos and videos, they can collect extra information from the files (called metadata) -- like the time the photo was taken, where, and what day. On top of all that, Zoosk can create "inferences" about you, which are assumptions about you based on other data from your profile or how you use the service. Ouff.

Aside from the information you give Zoosk about yourself, there's some data that's collected automatically -- like everything you do on Zoosk, your IP address, location, and even other apps you've downloaded. And if you use Zoosk Live, a livestreaming feature, you should know that Zoosk says they're "not responsible for the practices of companies that we do not own or control, such as companies we partner with for certain services like Zoosk Live or Zoosk Great Dates." That means you "agree" to the company that operates that feature's privacy policy and terms when you use that feature and that your name, age, location, photos, education, body type, and more might be shared with that company. We don't like the sound of that. Another spooky tidbit from the Zoosk Live part of the privacy policy is where it says "[w]hen using Zoosk Live, you may be visible to users from other dating and social platforms outside of Zoosk"... OK? We'd love to tell you which ones, but the list of "Live partners" Zoosk shares in their privacy policy is just links right back to the (same) privacy policy. Yeeeeeeesh.

Zoosk's data-collecting doesn't stop there. Zoosk can collect information about you from other sources -- like other people, social media, affiliates, and "other third-party information providers". If you use Facebook or Google to sign in, that could give both apps a chance to exchange information about you. That's why we don't recommend connecting your social media with dating apps. All together, it's a whole lot of information about you in one place.

And what for? Well, aside from helping you find a true connection, Zoosk says they can use your personal data to show you "targeted offers and ads through [their] website, email, social media channels, third-party sites or on other devices you may use". That's not good. Zoosk's privacy policy also says users can import their address book and can be notified when their contacts sign up for their services. That could get awkward if your neighbor saved your number from that time you texted about your squirrel problem. You might not want them to be among the first to know you're looking.

Does Zoosk at least keep your personal data secure? We have worries about that. We couldn't confirm whether the app uses encryption and whether they have a way of managing security vulnerabilities. That means we can't confirm whether Zoosk meets our Minimum Security Standards, which puts your pile of personal information at a much bigger risk of being leaked, breached, or hacked. And shoot, it doesn't seem like all users are guaranteed the right to get their personal data deleted from Zoosk either.

One more concern about Zoosk, which is true of all dating apps with million of users, it can attract romance scammers -- people who pretend to want your love but who are really after your cash. That might be why Zoosk has a pretty weird footnote on their website that says (or yells, if you read all-caps that way) that "ZOOSK DOES NOT CONDUCT CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS ON THE MEMBERS OR THE SUBSCRIBERS OF THIS WEBSITE." It's a good reminder to be safe out there.

What could go wrong with Zoosk? It'd be super weird to be followed around the internet by ads for Zoosk informed by your "sexual life experiences," wouldn't it? We're not totally sure what that would look like, but we also don't care to find out.

Wskazówki, jak się chronić

  • Follow Zoosk's Safety Tips.
  • Visit the app's privacy preferences at the app and opt out from personalized advertising as well as all non-essential data collection.
  • Request your data be deleted once you stop using the app. Simply deleting an app from your device usually does not erase your personal data nor does close your account.
  • Do not give consent to constant geolocation tracking by the app. Better provide geolocation 'only when using the app'.
  • Do not share sensitive data through the app.
  • Do not give access to your photos and video or camera.
  • Do not log in using third-party accounts.
  • Do not connect to any third party via the app, or at least make sure that a third party employs decent privacy practices.
  • Do not give consent for sharing of personal data for marketing and advertising.
  • Choose a strong password! You may use a password control tool like 1Password, KeePass etc.
  • Do not use social media plug-ins.
  • Use your device privacy controls to limit access to your personal information via app (do not give access to your camera, microphone, images, location unless necessary).
  • Keep your app regularly updated.
  • Limit ad tracking via your device (eg on iPhone go to Privacy -> Advertising -> Limit ad tracking) and biggest ad networks (for Google, go to Google account and turn off ad personalization).
  • When starting a sign-up, do not agree to tracking of your data if possible.
