Crossing paths and finding dates. That's the idea behind the location-based dating app Happn. Launched in 2014, Happn works by showing you other people on Happn who you have crossed paths with (and by crossed paths, they mean come within 250 meters of). If you cross paths with someone who catches your eye, you can like their profile. Only if that person likes you back, what Happn calls a Crush, can you then message them. Free users can access basic matching, sending likes, chatting with a Crush, and can play the CrushTime game. Premium users get set invisibility time so others can't see them, find out who Liked them, and send up to 10 FlashNotes ("Like" notifications to other users) per day. Oh boy! To sign up, you can use your phone number or login with Facebook, Google, or Apple (but please don't sign up with those third parties if you value your privacy!). So, does Happn happen to be good at privacy? Well, we found it nearly impossible to even find their privacy policy, which isn't a good sign. Over all though, they aren't the worst app we reviewed.

Co się może stać, jeśli coś pójdzie nie tak?

Good news! Happn isn't as terrible for your privacy as many other dating apps are. The French app is only one of two dating apps we reviewed in 2024 that doesn't earn any privacy and security dings (the other one being Lex). We should mention that it was a close call -- we almost couldn't find their privacy policy at all, which is a serious privacy sin indeed. Once we did find it it though, it looked pretty OK to us.

Happn's privacy policy separates the information that they can collect about you into three handy categories: mandatory (to use the app), required for certain purposes (as in information that's needed for certain features), and optional. Hopefully that difference is clear while you're on the app too, since you'll be invited to share some pretty personal details about your lifestyle and body. But just in case, you should know it says the only information you have to share is basic signup data like your name and contact information. Data that's collected automatically -- like technical data from your device and everything you do on the app -- is also mandatory.

That means you do not have to share your geolocation to use Happn. But if you don't, the app won't highlight the profiles of people you've "crossed paths" with in real life, which is kinda Happn's "thing". You can turn off the app's access to your location in your device settings and enter your city instead. It's cool to have the option since dating apps don't have the best track record of keeping your location private. Luckily, Happn is not one of of the many companies with a recent data breach, leak, or hack. Phew! But, still. Also in the category of things-best-not-to-share is access to your Facebook, Apple, or Google Account. When you login to Happn using a third-party account like one of those, both can potentially collect more information about you.

Oh and when you're filling out your profile, know that any sensitive information you include in there about your health, "sexual life," or political opinions, is considered "clearly made public" by Happn. That's a weird thing to say but we're pretty sure it means that posting that information is also consenting to it being processed (because otherwise processing sensitive personal information without explicit consent would be against Europe's GDPR). Gotcha. Happn also says your DMs and video calls are private. Good to know!

So what does Happn do with your personal information? Well, aside from what you'd expect (like delivering you the service), they can use it to personalize ads you see on the app. That's not awesome but also doesn't worry us too much. You can opt out of personalized ads "by clicking 'My Data' then 'Manage my Choices.'" Another thing you can do is ask Happn to delete your personal information. We love to see it!

One last thing you should know about Happn is that we read that the app uses artificial intelligence to power their matching algorithm. If they do, that's something we'd like to see explained in detail on their website. Since we don't know much about how it works, we're left with worries about privacy and fairness that we can't really answer.

Overall, Happn's actually pretty OK for your privacy. What could go wrong is that when you go to do your weekly read of your favorite apps' privacy policies, you can't find Happn's! But then you come here, and read this instead. Maybe that's not so bad.

Wskazówki, jak się chronić

  • Follow Happn's safety tips.
  • Visit the app's privacy preferences at the app and opt out from personalized advertsing as well as all non-essential data collection.
  • Request your data be deleted once you stop using the app. Simply deleting an app from your device usually does not erase your personal data nor does close your account.
  • Do not give consent to constant geolocation tracking by the app. Better provide geolocation 'only when using the app'.
  • Do not share sensitive data through the app.
  • Do not give access to your photos and video or camera.
  • Do not log in using third-party accounts.
  • Do not connect to any third party via the app, or at least make sure that a third party employs decent privacy practices.
  • Do not give consent for sharing of personal data for marketing and advertisement.
  • Chose a strong password! You may use a password control tool like 1Password, KeePass etc.
  • Do not use social media plug-ins.
  • Use your device privacy controls to limit access to your personal information via app (do not give access to your camera, microphone, images, location unless neccessary).
  • Keep your app regularly updated.
  • Limit ad tracking via your device (eg on iPhone go to Privacy -> Advertising -> Limit ad tracking) and biggest ad networks (for Google, go to Google account and turn off ad personalization).
  • When starting a sign-up, do not agree to tracking of your data if possible.
