Mozilla’s Responsible Computer Science Challenge Opens Applications In Kenya

(KENYA | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2022) — Mozilla and USAID are excited to announce that Responsible Computer Science Challenge (RCSC) applications are officially open in Kenya. Kenyan innovation hubs and accredited institutions of higher education that blend ethics and computer science curricula can now apply — and help shape the next generation of technologists in Kenya. At least 10 grants of 25 000 USD, or 3 million KSh, will be awarded.
In August, Mozilla first announced that RCSC — which has awarded $3.5 million to 19 universities across the U.S. over the last four years — will now be expanding to Kenya.
RCSC is fueled by the reality that technologists have immense influence in today’s world. The code they write and products they build can be innovative and helpful — but they can also be biased, discriminatory, and manipulative, even if unintentionally. They can determine who does (or doesn’t) receive a loan, how election information spreads, and how diseases are diagnosed. RCSC supports the conceptualization, development, and piloting of curricula that empowers students to think about the social implications of computing. In the long term, RCSC supports the education of a new wave of technologists who take ethics into account in their work and design human-centric technology.
In order to qualify, RCSC applicants must be based in Kenya; focused on undergraduate computing-related education; and demonstrate how ethics will be integrated into computing-related curricula or pedagogy.

Past RCSC awardees include Computing Narratives, The Impossible Project, Teaching Responsible Computing and Responsible Computing Fellows. These are just a few examples from the challenge’s outputs in the past four years. With funding from Omidyar Network, Mozilla, Schmidt Futures, and Craig Newmark Philanthropies, awardees from the first round of RCSC across the U.S. have created 100 distinct classes with more than 15,000 students. Faculty span the social sciences, humanities, and computer science disciplines.
