Senior Fellow, Trustworthy AI
2022
Germany

Neema Iyer is an artist and technologist. She is the founder of Pollicy, a feminist civic technology collective based in Kampala, Uganda; the co-host of the Terms and Conditions podcast; a Practitioner Fellow at Stanford’s Digital Civil Society Lab; and sits on Facebook’s Global Women’s Safety Advisory Board. Pollicy uses data, design, and technology to explore the impact of emerging technology on society and vice-versa.
Neema leads several research projects exploring ways through which Africans can take back control of their data and reimagine new ways of technology ownership. Some of her art can be found here.
Fellowship Project
Neema researched the prevalence of online gender-based violence against women in Africa, specifically Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, and Senegal. She also examined the existing and/or lacking legal and policy protections afforded to women in those countries. Neema explored the accountability and redress mechanism provided by platforms and social media sites to cases coming from these regions. This project was completed by Pollicy, the feminist civic technology collective that Neema founded, with Mozilla Senior Fellow Amber Sinha’s lead.
