(OCTOBER 26, 2023) — Mozilla Senior Advisor Dr. Abeba Birhane will serve on the United Nations Secretary-General’s newly-convened AI Advisory Body, the UN announced today.
The AI Advisory Body will counsel the UN on global coordinated AI governance. It will examine issues at the intersection of AI and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, which include peace and justice, gender equality, innovation, and economic growth.
The body will provide analysis and recommendations over the course of one year, culminating in a final report and associated summit for United Nations member states. The body consists of just 32 experts, narrowed down from 1,800 nominations across more than 100 countries.
Dr. Birhane advises Mozilla on AI accountability, helping inform the organization’s research, advocacy, and movement building around trustworthy AI. Prior, Dr. Birhane was a Senior Mozilla Fellow in Trustworthy AI. Dr. Birhane holds a PhD in Cognitive Science and is an Adjunct Lecturer/Assistant Professor at the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
