Africa Innovation Mradi: In Real Life (IRL) Fund

Award Details

Through the IRL Fund Awards, we will provide awards of up to $50,000 USD to contribute to movement building efforts that manifest the development, utility and governance of technologies and the impact this has on social justice issues, both on and offline.

Our goal is to provide IRL Fund awardees with the resources needed to enhance their potential for impact and to make them more sustainable in the long term.

Awardees will be expected to attend scheduled convenings, including quarterly cohort calls, for the duration of their project (12 months, beginning in March 2023) in order to share their progress, ask questions, and exchange learning.

Other support we offer:

  • Expert/Mentorship Support: Awardees will have access to Mozilla Fellows and other experts in Mozilla’s network with relevant subject matter expertise, who may serve as mentors to project teams.
  • Cohort and Individual Support: All Awardees will either convene virtually or in-person for activities; group working and feedback sessions, peer-to-peer support, learn from guest speakers about relevant topics, and meet 1:1 with Mozilla staff for additional support.
  • Community: Connections with like-minded leaders, opportunities for collaboration with partner organizations, alumni, and Mozilla staff, and interdisciplinary connections to support their project.
  • Showcasing Work: Mozilla holds an annual festival called MozFest which brings together artists, activists, thinkers, and builders working from around the world who are all working towards a healthier internet. This event provides a place and an opportunity to convene, facilitate or curate in a way that helps fellows and awardees raise the issues that are most pressing for them and their communities.
  • Communication Support: Mozilla’s Communications and Marketing Team will evaluate and offer a spectrum of support to Awardees including developing tailored communication strategies for each project, pitching to local and international media outlets, crafting social media campaigns, and sharing with Mozilla’s website audience and email list.
