Wyze Video Doorbell
Review date: Nov. 8, 2021
Wyze, that Seattle-based company known for making super affordable home security cameras now also makes a video doorbell. It's got the things video doorbells have: HD video, two-way audio, motion detection, smart alerts. It even records video in the taller 3:4 aspect ratio rather than the usual 16:9 aspect ratio, because, as they rightly point out, people are taller than they are wide. Smart Wyze, smart. Free Cloud storage comes with purchase and there's a subscription for what Wyze calls Cam plus that gets you real-time alerts, pet detection, and unlimited video event length recording for $1.99 a month.
What could happen if something goes wrong?
The biggest worry we have about Wyze’s affordable security cams is the huge data leak they suffered back in December, 2019 that exposed the personal information of 2.4 million customers when they left a database unprotected for 22 days. That is not good, not good at all. Fortunately, Wyze jumped on fixing their epic goof, which is what you want to see when something like this happens. And as far as we can tell, Wyze hasn’t had any major security vulnerabilities or data leaks since then.
All in all, these cameras seem ok for your front porch spying needs. What’s the worst that could happen? Well, we suppose the videos you record to the Cloud, because there is no local storage on this Wyze video doorbell, could get compromised when a major state sponsored cyber attack happens. That state, say, Russia for example, could learn who you and your neighbors vote for and then target you with ads to try and change your vote. That would not be cool. Also, probably not likely. Still, not cool.
