Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fittest of them all? You will be with this full-length mirror that projects all kinds of workouts for $39 per month—from kettlebell to yoga flow to kickboxing—so you can watch yourself workout while watching trainers work you out. The Mirror comes with a built-in camera and microphone if you want to plop down another $40 for a personalized training session. It's a little weird. It's maybe cool. It's potentially awkward when you're checking your buff naked self out in your mirror and up pops a guy ready to get your legs and lungs burning.

What could happen if something goes wrong?

As with any device that brings a camera and microphone into your home, you should be cautious. We like that the Mirror comes with a lens cap to cover the camera when not in use. We don't like that there's no way to tell when the microphone is on and in use. We also don't like that the company's privacy policy doesn't detail what it does with audio and video data. Is this being saved? We weren't able to tell.

Mirror says they don’t sell you personal information, which is good. They do say they can share your personal information for marketing and other purposes with a number of third parties. They do not say they will de-identify this personal data of yours, which isn’t good. And when you choose to connect with a social media service or other third party platform like Facebook, Spotify or Apple Health, Mirror may collect information about you from that platform. All in all, we worry Mirror can, and does, collect a fair amount of personal information on their users. And we worry they are sharing this personal information without de-identifying it. And we’re really worried they don’t say in their privacy policy how they handle really senstive personal data like audio and video of you in front of your Mirror sweating and grunting.

Tips to protect yourself

  • Be very careful what third party companies you consent to share you health data with. If you do decided to share your health data with another company, read their privacy policy to see how they protect, secure, and share or sell your data.
  • Once you do not use a device any more, make sure to request deletion of all your data.
