We are thrilled to introduce our newest cohort of public interest technologists working with civil society organizations based in the Global Majority to embed meaningful technology expertise into their missions. Together, they are fostering community engagement and advancing a more just, equitable digital world.
Civil society organizations play a vital role in combating inequality and safeguarding the public interest. As digital technologies, including AI, increasingly shape our lives, it is crucial that civil society is actively – and expertly – involved in addressing societal challenges brought about through the introduction of these new tools.
Mozilla’s Tech & Society Fellowship exists to bridge the gap between technology and civil society, especially in the Global Majority, where public interest technologists and organizations often face power and resource imbalances. Over the next 18 months, ten fellows will collaborate with organizations in Tunisia, Mexico, Brazil, Kenya, India, and Lebanon, tackling diverse digital challenges across social justice issues.
Launched in 2020 in partnership with the Ford Foundation, the fellowship pairs civil society organizations in the Global Majority with technologists to design strategies that address local issues through technology. The program also strengthens leadership in the regions by empowering technologists to drive change.
Mozilla’s fellowship program supports efforts to create a more human-centered internet. We offer funding, amplification, and networking opportunities to individuals committed to trustworthy AI and a healthy internet, promoting privacy, inclusion, and openness. Past fellows have held big tech platforms accountable in Kenya, exposed algorithmic racism in Brazil, and advocated for marginalized communities online in Mexico.
We are excited to see this new cohort continue to make a lasting impact.
