Just a week ago, Mozilla and thousands of internet users urged Facebook to pause Group Recommendations ahead of the U.S. election. Today we learned that Facebook is largely heeding our call, and has paused recommendations of political groups, social issue groups, and all new groups.

This decision is proof that consumers can hold platforms accountable. Thanks to a critical mass of internet users demanding it, a dangerous vulnerability on Facebook has been checked at a critical moment.

Mozilla will continue to push Facebook to pause Group Recommendations through January 2021, and to expand the moratorium to all groups. And when Facebook says it will ‘assess’ the impact of their decision, we say — give independent researchers the data to assess that, too.

We also urge Twitter to meet our similar demand, and pause Trending Topics until January 2021.
