Mozilla is providing grants ranging between $15,000 and $30,000 for the 2023 Creative Media Awards cohort to examine responsible design in AI technologies.

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2022) Mozilla is calling all creatives working at the intersection of art and artificial intelligence (AI) to apply for our 2023 Creative Media Awards (CMA).

This year, we are specifically looking for art and media that examine the role and importance of responsible, ethical or justice-centered design in trustworthy AI. Projects should also examine how the concept of responsible design applies and manifests across distinct geographies and socio-cultural experiences.

Award winners will receive between $15,000 and $30,000 to help bring their project to life on the web. Applications open 31 October and close 9 December, 2022. For more on the award criteria and to apply, visit this site. Ten projects will be selected for the 2023 CMA cohort, which includes two awards allocated specifically for applicants from Eastern and/or Southern Africa as part of Creative Media Awards’ collaboration with Mozilla’s African Innovation Mradi.. The Africa Innovation Mradi’s goals are to generate product development, build community, build capacity, and produce a meaningful impact on the African internet ecosystem and on social justice issues, both on and offline.

Past Mozilla Creative Media Awardees have reimagined the way data is governed, put a spotlight on how AI can reinforce or disrupt systems of oppression, and highlighted how AI intersects with online media and truth.

Says Kofi Yeboah, Mozilla Program Officer: “This year’s Creative Media Awards will convene people and projects who highlight the challenges, opportunities, and implications of designing “responsible” AI across different geographies, demographics, and cultures. It’s crucial that the AI systems around us are designed responsibly — but does ‘responsibly’ mean the same thing in every country and context?”

For the past four years, recipients of the Mozilla’s Creative Media Award (CMA) have created interactive experiences, games, videos, films and more. Their work has explored AI and its impacts - both good and bad. These projects have helped people understand, imagine, and critique what trustworthy AI could and should look like. Projects have gone on to show at a variety of regional and global film festivals (IDFA, Tribeca, TIFF, Cannes) and museums (Tate Modern, MoMA, HKW), to name a few.

Winners of the 2023 Creative Media Awards will be notified by January 30 and publicly announced in the week of March 6, 2023.
